If there's much at all to tell about the life of the most renowned detective and his adventures in the criminal world, it would narrow to one sole, significant word: Kira. Everything before this is only a matter of consequence; if you ask, L will probably give you a clueless smile and request some more sugar with his coffee. Everything after is only a matter of, well, understanding a key concept: justice will prevail. Unless, of course, you're short on time and even shorter on information.

We'll start with the beginning, as provided.

L Lawliet is actually a large part of a whole other world, one filled with young children and their aspiring minds, as well as their ability to succeed the title of "L". It is no more than a title; it's hard, virtually impossible, to attach a name and a person and a beating heart to "L", simply because L exists in secrecy, L exists in isolation, L exists behind computer screens and the promising word of mercy and justice. A scrambled voice isn't much to go by, especially when it's telling you what to do and when to do it, telling you to take risks and chances, and no, you can't do that yet, you'll screw everything up. Telling you to put your life on the line for a person - a concept - you're not even sure you fully support.

Wammy's House was founded on the drive of intellect and the desire to input it somewhere. Children from all parts of the world were gathered: all of them orphans, all of them possessing traits and characteristics up and above an average level of expectancy. Children who would otherwise be forgotten in the ebb and flow of society are taken under the wing of the creater, a man: Quillsh Wammy. And L Lawliet is a legend in the making.

Or perhaps he's already been made.

Kira's story interrupts L's; Kira takes charge of the criminal world and expounds upon it; Kira rips L's careful efforts apart and claims it is the way of God and the way of The New World. A killing notebook wreaks havoc and rules with terrorism, ending the accused lives of countless by the hundreds of thousands without a hint of remorse. Yagami Light is truly a brilliant individual, which is why L initially takes the graduate into custody after things spiral out of control. The evidence L uncovers through the investigation is as incredible as it is devastating; he is brought into a whole new playing field, freed from the element of logical deduction and into something far worse. Death Gods and Death Notes, a seemingly innocent college student and his clingy girlfriend, Kira one and two and three; late nights spent in front of monitors, tirelessly persisting dead ends and dry leads.

Breakthroughs are made and concrete walls are met. Amidst it all, L Lawliet manages to keep his life while surrendering himself to the only case in his entire life that has ever come so close to ending everything; the only case that has ever required such personal, hands-on terms. L makes a friend; L makes a rival.

In the end, he fails. Heart attack claims him and within the last few seconds of a dimming life, to the tolling of the bells...

He knows he was right.
